Magnesium: Discover the Benefits of this Wonder Mineral to Reduce Stress on the Body

Magnesium is an amazing mineral. It relaxes arteries and airways and reverses inflammation in the body as well as magnesium can aide the body’s cells in using insulin. Magnesium can help with migraines, leg cramps, P.M.S., digestive problems like constipation and malabsorption, heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, acne, and asthma to name a few aggravating medical conditions.

Magnesium is found in many delicious foods such as: buckwheat, bulgur, oat bran, dark chocolate, halibut, wheat flour whole grain, spinach, barley, spinach, cornmeal, pumpkin seeds, figs, navy beans, pinto beans, almonds, wheat germ, eggs, and seaplants. Yum!

However, magnesium, among other nutrients is deficient in the food supply and few people are eating the quantities of whole foods that they should. “In a recent survey” published in the Journal of Nutrition, “of 16,110 North Americans, a large percentage of the population fails to meet even minimal nutrient intakes set forth in the Dietary Reference Intakes for several vitamins and minerals” without supplementing.

“A large percentage of the population had total usual intakes below the estimated average requirement for vitamin A (34%), vitamin C (25%), vitamin D (70%) and vitamin E (60%). In addition, calcium intakes were below the estimated average requirement in 38% of the population and 45% were low in magnesium.”*

So we see almost half of us are deficient in magnesium. Magnesium deficiency can cause annoying symptoms like fatigue and nausea.

If you are supplementing with magnesium, be sure it is a chelated form because it will be better absorbed than the oxide form. Glycinate may be the best form as citrate can cause diarrhea in some people. Recommended dosage is 200–400 mg of magnesium a day.
