Examples of Antioxidants

Examples of antioxidants include:

Beta-carotene - found in:

  • orange coloured foods -- carrots, cantaloupe, pumkin, apricots, squash and mango
  • some green leafy vegetables -- kale, collard greens, spinach

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) - found in:

  • Citrus fruits like oranges and lime etc, green peppers, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, strawberries and tomatoes
  • cereals, beef, poultry and fish.

Vitamin A - found in:

  • milk, egg yolks, and mozzarella cheese
  • Carrots, squash, broccoli, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, kale, collards, cantaloupe, peaches and apricots (bright-colored fruits and vegetables)

Vitamin E (Alpha-tocopherol) - found in:

  • Almonds, nuts & seeds, whole grains, wheat germ, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, mangos, vegetable oils and soybean oil

Lutein - found in:

  • dark green, leafy vegetables such as collard greens, spinach, brussel sprouts, broccoli, kale and kiwi

Lignan - found in:

  • flax seed, oatmeal, barley, and rye

Lycopene - found in:

  • tomatoes, watermelon, guava, papaya, apricots, pink grapefruit, blood oranges, and other foods

Selenium (a mineral component of antioxidant enzymes)- found in:

  • red meat, fish & shellfish, eggs, chicken
  • grains, brazil nuts and garlic

Flavonoids / polyphenols - found in:

  • soy, red wine, purple grapes or Concord grapes, acai berry, pomegranate, blueberries, cranberries, tea

Vitamin-like Antioxidants:

  • Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
  • Glutathione

Antioxidant enzymes made by the body:

  • superoxide dismutase (SOD)
  • catalase
  • glutathione peroxidase
 
Look for Bright Colourful Fresh Produce  
apples, pears, tomatoes, cucumber, peppers  
Antioxidant rich foods also include apples, pears, tomatoes,
cucumber, peppers and green leafy vegetables.
