High Fructose Corn Syrup is a major deterrent to the normal appetite. It is not recognized as a food by the brain, but it signals the hypothalamus to keep eating. Even low fat foods that contain HFCS do this. You're hungry and cannot shut off your appetite. Alcohol also inhibits leptin. The hormone Ghrelin comes from the stomach to increase appetite (root means "growth") and stimulates the growth hormone. Hunger impulses occur every 30" but are stronger when dieting or just hungry. Fructose in a free state (ie: not in fruit) promotes disease more readily because it contains no enzymes, vitamins or minerals. In fact in order to get metabolized fructose robs the body expecially the liver of micronutrients. Test animals developed cirrohosis of the liver when given fructose.
High-Fructose Corn Syrup contains free unbound fructose and interferes with the heart's use of key minerals (magnesium, copper and chromium). HFCS inhibits white blood cells in defense of harmful invaders such as infections and is implicated in elevated cholesterol and the creation of blood clots. Consumption of HFCS causes an increase in uric acid, an indication of heart disease. It also raises serum tri-glycerides significantly, which is another indicator of heart disease. Fructose is metabolized in the liver, but when there is too much, the liver turns it into fat. When the liver can't handle it, it is malabsorbed and thrown out in the urine excreting iron, magnesium, calcium and zinc, or by diarrhea causing gastrointestinal distress and loss of these essential minerals.
Diabetes
High Fructose Corn Syrup is implicated strongly in promoting insulin resistance and complications from diabetes. HFCS drinks are 10 times "richer" in carbonyl compounds which are elevated in diabetes and are blamed for diabetic complications such as foot ulcers and eye and nerve damage. Because fructose is metabolized in liver it does not stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin the way it normally does with sucrose. Fructose browns food 7 x faster than glucose and so decreases protein digestibility and quality and increases protein toxicity. The reactions between fructose and protein affect aging and the complications of diabetes. Fructose reduces the affinity of insulin for its receptors (hallmark of type 2 diabetes). Everyone should avoid over-exposure to fructose but people on this list should cut out High Fructose Corn Syrup altogether. One - two fruits a day are okay, but drink no commercial fruit juices and consume no products with added HFCS, such as soda pop. These are far more dangerous than sugar.
Copper DeficiencyIn today's world children are not fed liver -- a great source of copper. Copper deficiency is widespread in America. In today's world children lack the collagen and elastin to hold the body together. Fructose is known to interfere with copper metabolism such that collagen and elastin cannot form.
