How to Achieve Balance

Learn how to look after yourself.

In 1973 our family prepared for a flying trip to Calgary. My husband (the pilot) instructed me on the oxygen routine. To go over the Rockies from the west we had to fly over 15,000 feet and thus would need to supplement our oxygen intake. He made it clear that as he would be flying the plane, that if I passed out there would be no one to make sure our three children were wearing the necessary oxygen masks. Put yours on FIRST and then help them, he told me.

As I had the tendency to put the children first, this rule and its logic impressed me. I remembered how I'd pursued painting lessons seven years earlier, and how the activity had enriched my life, and taught the children respect for me and my art materials. There was a balance for all.

Balance is the key.

Balance is the key and in the end creates less stress for both parent and child.

So I realized - don't give up your adult life, but don't abandon your children for it either. There are seven days in a week and twenty four hours in every day. Surely some of that time is yours and some of it is theirs.

Have a cuppa tea and think about it.

PS: Remember to get outdoors and walk with your kids.

PPS: Read the comics every day; they mirror family life and put a smile on your face!
